U.S. chipmaker Intel has confirmed plans to invest $2.7 billion in its southern Israel facility in order to produce 22-nanometer technology for semiconductors.
The two-year investment plan in the Kiryat Gat factory includes a $210 million grant recently approved by the Israeli government.
The investment will make the Kiryat Gat plant the second of Intel's properties to be fully ready for 22nm production. The new venture will also boost the facility's workforce, opening approximately 1,000 jobs over the coming year.
"We are already in preparation for hiring," Maxine Fassberg, general manager of Intel Israel, told a news conference. "We are scheduled to start production in December."
Intel currently employs 7,057 people in Israel. The company is one of Israel's largest private-sector employers.
Intel has received $1.2 billion in grants from the Israeli government since it began manufacturing in the country 25 years ago, according to Fassberg. Before this year, it invested $7.3 billion in Israel.
Meanwhile, technology blogs are announcing that if Intel's 22nm production starts in December 2011 as planned, the first 22nm chips could be ready in early 2012.

Israel's exports surged 145% in 2009

Making the world a Better Place

RAMAT HASHARON, Israel (AP) -- Israel is on schedule to inaugurate a revolutionary electric car grid with dozens of recharge stations and thousands of cars on the road by next year, the project's developers said Sunday. The California-based company Better Place hopes Israel's model will lead a shift toward electric transportation worldwide.
...When the grid is complete, drivers will be able to recharge their vehicles using plugs installed next to parking spaces. On longer trips, motorists can stop at stations where a machine can replace the car's lithium ion battery. The cars, developed with Renault-Nissan, have a range of about 100 miles (160 kilometers) before the battery must be replaced.
...The company, founded by Israel-American businessman Shai Agassi, a former top executive at software giant SAP AG, raised $350 million from an HSBC-led investor consortium last month, one of the largest clean-tech investments in history. The new financing values Better Place at $1.25 billion.
Speaking Sunday, Agassi said his goal was to help end global dependence on oil. "Israel has taken on the problem (of oil dependency) and has decided independently to solve this for the entire world," he said....

Israeli drones soar

While Israeli soldiers can't fight in the war in Afghanistan, Israeli drones can.
Starting next week, five NATO member countries will be operating unmanned aerial vehicles produced in the Jewish state in anti-Taliban operations in the Central Asian country.
Next week, officials from the German military will arrive to take delivery of an undisclosed number of Heron UAVs, made by Israel Aerospace Industries.
The Heron is a medium altitude long endurance UAV that can remain airborne for more than 30 hours with a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet, and can carry a payload of 250 kg. It has a wingspan of 16.6 meters, a takeoff weight of 1,200 kg. and an operational range of several hundred kilometers. It can carry a variety of sensors used for surveillance and target identification.
Germany is the fifth country to operate Israel Aerospace Industries UAVs in Afghanistan. In December, the Royal Australian Air Force took delivery of several Heron systems, joining Spain, France and Canada that already operate the platform.
Israel is a recognized world leader in the development of UAVs. In November, the Brazilian government announced that it was prepared to sign a $350 million deal to purchase Heron UAVs to patrol its cities and borders, and to provide security for the 2014 Soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.
Later this year, Israel Aerospace Industries will hold demonstrations of the Heron for Panamanian security forces in conjunction with the US military's Southern Command. The demonstration in Panama will focus on counter-drug operations, as well as border security.
Last May, the Heron underwent a month-long evaluation by the aSouthern Command nd the Salvadoran military to judge its suitability for counter-drug missions in Latin America and the Pacific. It was the first time that the drone, designed for intelligence gathering and surveillance, was used in such operations.
